Description

The building, improperly called San Macuto, has recently been used for parliamentary commissions.
The name Macuto comes from the saint to whom the church in the same square was dedicated.
Legend has it that the name of the building is that of a monk from Wales, who took refuge in the Gallic Roman city of Aleithum, today's Saint Malo, to escape persecution by the Saxons, founded a monastery there, and then, once he had become abbot, was proclaimed bishop of the population.
The palace, annexed to the church, was built in 1607 by Count Girolamo Gabrielli of Gubbio and in 1729 was granted to the Jesuits, who had transferred the students of the Roman seminary there and opened a boarding school for youngsters from noble families.
After the suppression of the Society of Jesus, the church and palace were purchased by the Monte di Pietà (1774), which gave the former to the Confraternity of the Curiali and the palace to Cardinal Borromeo, who still retains his name.
In 1849 it was installed by Mazzini and later became the Ministry of Public Works.
The palace now houses the Collegio di San Roberto Bellarmino.
