Description

This is the last of the roman palaces to be commissioned by a pope for his family: pope Pius V Braschi commissioned Cosimo Morelli to built it between 1791 and 1796. In 1871 it was sold to the Italian state and became the seat of the Ministry of the Interior, then the seat of a Fascist institution. Since 1949 it is the seat of the Museo di Roma. The building has a trapezoid shape with rounded off corners. The main façade overlooks Piazza San Pantaleo, here two onion marble columns flank the door decorated with the coat of arms of the Braschi family and support a balcony that goes to the two adjacent sides. At the rounded off corner towards north-west is the famous talking statue of Pasquino. The rectangular shape of the courtyard recalls the palace of Caserta by Vanvitelli. The atrium on Via di San Pantaleo leads to the majestic staircase decorated with ancient statues, only remains of the precious lost collection.
