Description

The fountain leans against the boundary wall of Parco Savello, better known as the “giardino degli aranci” (garden of orange-trees). It reuses a mask designed in 1593 by Giacomo Della Porta that was already part of a trough near the columns of the Tempio dei Castori in Campus Vaccinus, the former name of the Forum Romanum. When the trough was dismantled in 1827, the mask was used to decorate a fountain of the old Porto Leonino. It was moved again later due to the construction of the embankments of the Tiber river. Today it surmounts the granite pond placed by Antonio Muñoz in 1936 in the quiet Piazza Pietro d’Illiria on the Aventine Hill.
