Description
The fountain of the Navicella (small ship) is placed in front of the church of Santa Maria in Domnica on the Caelius Mountain and was built around 1518 under pope Leo the Tenth Medici (1513-1521). Probably designed by Andrea Sansovino, the navicella replaced amarble ship (perhaps an ex voto (votive offering) of the Roman age dedicated tothe goddess Isis by sailors lodged in the nearby castra peregrina) that was already documented by fifteenth century sources. The monument presents a coat of arms of the Medici family. It was transformed into a fountain only in 1931, when the area in front f the church was restored.
