Description
The project for the University City was started in 1932 by the rationalist architect Marcello Piacentini and was completed in 1935 with the Law, Humanities, Political Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mineralogy and Biology Institutes and the Rector's Palace. Previously, the University had its headquarters at the Studium Urbis in the church of Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza - the historic site of the foundation by Pope Boniface VIII in 1303 with the bull In Supremae praeminentia Dignitatis - but as the number of students grew, the need arose to move the building to a larger and more welcoming area between the Policlinico and the Verano Cemetery, along Via Nomentana.
