Description

The casale of S. Eusebio (also known as the tower of S. Eusebio) is located approximately one kilometre south of the thirteenth kilometre of the present-day via Tiburtina.
It stands on a forty-metre-high tufa spur overlooking a bend in the Aniene river, in a dominant position with respect to the surrounding area, and its high tower can be seen from a distance from today's Grande Raccordo Anulare; the entire top of the hill is also surrounded by a powerful wall of tufa blocks.
The outstanding feature of the complex is undoubtedly the high tower (about 26 m.): at its base is a large plinth of reused travertine slabs (probably from a villa or a Roman tomb in the vicinity), while the elevation consists of a masonry made of red tuff blocks (the so-called 'tufelli') almost completely exposed, with several restorations, among which the one in bricks on the S and E sides is particularly evident. The tower has embrasures on the lower floors, travertine-framed windows on the upper floors and a projecting structure with Guelph (i.e. square) battlements; in the tufa masonry one can recognise many of the holes used by the construction scaffolding.
During the visit, it is possible to climb up onto the tower terrace from where there is a beautiful view of Rome and its surroundings.
