Description

Once the seat of the Roman priorate of the Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, later of Rhodes and Malta,  today the Casa houses the antiquarium of the Foro di Augusto. The knights established here at the end of the 12th century and built their seat upon ancient Roman ruins. Moved in 1566 on the Aventine hill, the nuns of the Santissima Annunziata came here. In 1946 the house was given to the Order of Malta. The façade that looks onto the square has a Romanesque toothed moulding and a 15th century Cross window. The central part, covered by a renaissance vault, has been converted in 1946 into the “Cappella di San Giovanni Battista”. From one of the doors, at the bottom of the stairs, is the entrance to the Augustan portico with arcades and travertine pillars, wonderfully preserved.

Please note: max 25 people at a time.
