Description
Restored Circus Maximus opens to the public in November 2016 for the first time.
Entrance from Piazza di Porta Capena.
After 2800 years of events now revealed by its treasures finally visible, Circus Maximus will embrace romans and tourists with its timeless splendor.
600 metres long and 140 metres large, it underwent uncountable changes during the centuries. Ever since the royal age all sorts of public event have taken place in Circus Maximus: horse riding, hunting to exotic animals, theatre performances, public executions as well as religious and triumphal processions. Afterwards, this area was used as passageway for “Acqua Mariana”, hosted crop cultivations and mills, became the Frangipanes’ property, then cemetery for the Jewish, to end up with the construction of Gazometer plants, stores, handcrafting, craft industries, and houses.
