Description

In the area behind the Aurelian Wall - between Porta Pinciana and Porta Salaria -, between 1700 and the early 20th century, urbanisation excavations revealed numerous sepulchral monuments.

Between 1700 and the early years of the 20th century, work on the construction of the new Salario district partly destroyed and partly incorporated the few archaeological remains into the urban fabric.

In the area behind the Aurelian walls between Porta Pinciana, Porta Salaria and Villa Borghese, excavations revealed numerous burial monuments from a large necropolis that extended along the first stretch of the Via Salaria Nova and the Via Salaria Vetus.

The so-called 'Salarian' burial ground can be dated to between the last Republican and the first Augustan age, but its funerary activity continued throughout the first century AD and sporadically continued into the following century.

The area has yielded a considerable amount of inscriptions, slabs, stones and small constructions. For the most part, these are very poor and rather bare columbaria, built in opus reticulatum and arranged on two floors: the first at street level, almost always lost, the second, usually better preserved, underground and served by a staircase.

Some monuments are still visible, such as some small tombs that came to light in 1871 when the Onorian remains of the Porta Salaria, severely damaged by cannon fire in 1870, were demolished under the direction of Virginio Vespignani. The eastern tower of the gate included two sepulchres which, dismantled and reassembled several times, were finally placed at the junction of Via Piave and Via Sulpicio Massimo, within the circuit of the Aurelian Walls.
