Description

The Pantheon, undoubtedly one of the best-preserved ancient monuments in Rome, is an admirable example of a Christian reuse of a sacred building originally dedicated to all the gods. It stands in the heart of the ancient Campus Martius, in one of the lowest points of Rome, and dominates the southern side of Piazza della Rotonda with its imposing façade.

The original construction, of which only a few traces remain, was built in 27 BC by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, Augustus' son-in-law, whose name appears in the inscription on the façade. The monument was completely rebuilt between 118 and 125 AD by Emperor Hadrian, who as we know did not use his name on the buildings he built. After a few restorations, carried out by the Severan emperors at the beginning of the third century AD, the monument fell into a state of neglect until 608, when it was ceded by the Byzantine emperor Phocas to Pope Boniface IV, who transformed it into the church of S. Maria ad Martyres.

In 1625 Pope Urban VIII, who belonged to the Barberini family, removed the bronze beams of the portico to make the four columns of the famous Bernini canopy of St. Peter's and eighty cannons for Castel S. Angelo.

In 1870, the Pantheon became the shrine of the kings of Italy and houses the remains of Victor Emmanuel II, Humbert I and Margaret of Savoy. The great Renaissance artist Raphael Sanzio is also buried here.
