Description
The ruins of a large circular funerary monument having a diameter of about 41 meters are visible near Porta Maggiore on the Via Prenestina. It originally had the shape of a tumulus and is one of the largest mausoleums in Rome after the ones of Augustus and Monte del Grano. We do not know the name of the recipient of the mausoleum that dates back to the age of Emperor Augustus, but surely it was built in honor of a personality of high standing. Engravings prove that during the Middle Ages the monument was fortified and assumed the appearance of a tower, hence the name of "Torrione" (Tower). In the fifteenth century the monument was used as a cellar and belonged to the Roman family of the Rufini, whose coat of arms is conserved on the entrance portal.
