Description
The remains in Via del Nazareno are the most important section still visible of the town path of the aqueduct of the Virgin waters. The aqueduct was built by Agrippa in 19 BC and from its source, located near the “casale di Salone” at km 10,500 of the Via Collatina, the aqueduct entered the town walls near the Muro Torto and ended with a monumental display in the baths of Agrippa. Today the same aqueduct still feeds the Trevi fountain, and the fountains of Piazza Navona. Near the present Piazza di Spagna the aqueduct, until then underground, went out and kept on raised arches of which today the ruins in via del Nazareno and in Via del Bufalo can be seen. A barrel vault comprises the section in Via del Nazareno. It was built by Claudius in 46 BC upon an ancient street of the regio VII: the pillars and the arch are made out of rustication realized with great peperino blocks, the moulding – now lost – was probably of travertine. The dedicatory inscription ascribes the building to Claudius and it can still be seen on both sides of the monument. When emperor Hadrian restored the course of the aqueduct, the arch in via del Nazareno was reinforced with a masonry covering and then, later, the pipe was raised of more than 1 meter compared to the original plan.
